Mierócles

Well It's mid week and three days until Christmas. It's now or never, get in the spirit or let it slide. Whatever you do, just be at peace with yourself and your actions. So as noted in my last post, the spirit just isn't hitting me, so I'm at peace with myself this year, knowing that it isn't that way every year. However, I did do my part and contributed to the spirit. I baked some coconut bread today and got some sorrell soaking so there, you see, I'm not a total scrooge after all. I did all this stuff while listening to some Socca parang and Sparrow Calypso.

OK, talking about baking and christmast, let me get in something about the infamous christmas fruit cake (too lazy to look for photos). What's the deal? All the time you hear the stories about the fruit cake and not wanting to be the recipient of one. I never knew what all the fuss was about as I was never one to receive one. First, I know better than to be taking anybodie fruit cake when I know that my mother busy baking one for me. You see my mom is master baker of Bajan black cake. Yes, I'm boasting. My mom, bakes the famous rum cakes for weddings, parties, birthdays, ect. She is always baking, so I gonna boast on her cakes now. I've yet to hear someone complain about her cakes. Anyhow I digress, let me get back to the Christmas fruit cake.

I was the luck or unlucky reciepent to receive on this year. Why me? Hell if I knew, Now I got my cake all neatly wrapped in foiled and some pretty wrapping paper. OK, no problem. I opened and the smell of the rum was killing me...man one whiff and I thought I was drunk, but on closer inspection, and when I did regaining my senses then is when the problems sit in. Man all I see is a whole heap ah big chunky fruits staring me in me face. Then I cut into de cake and the knife ein wanna cut atall...the cake all gooey and to make matter worse, it falling apart. I sey well, looka muh crosses, nuh wodner people talk bout theese infamous fruit cakes. Cause that is all it is, fruits smuched together wid some rum.

What happen to grinding and soaking de fruits, all up to three months ahead ah baking dem, wunna remember Jdid post?? Yuh gotta grind de fruits, as a matter, I just got finished talking to my mom and she tell me that she going to grind some fruits to make a cake sometime in Jan. You see, you grind the fruits, then cook them, then soak them all ahead of baking them. Making a fruit cake is an art, that takes time, not just throwing some fruits with rum in a pan and putting it in the oven. Then when you are finished baking the cake, it's all about letting it cool, all the while soaking it with some more run and not just any kind of run, it has to be the good stuff. So it's not the quantity of rum you use, but the quality.

Anyhow so back to my fruit cake, well I tasted a piece of it and decided that was enough for me. But being the person that I am and don't let good food (fruitcake) for that matter go to waste. I decided to share the joy. I gently cut it up into three big chuncks and gave them to the security guard and conseigre of our building. the other pieces or crumbs, I took to an office party and what was left of that, we gave to some homeless people. So people, enjoy your christmas fruit cakes....

Have a wonderful Christmas just incase I don't get to blog again before then

love fruit cake but hate the chunks. I like mine really moist almost like pudding.

I am there with you with the black cake. I have a friend love her to death but stay clear of the fruit cake she think she can make and she make so much. I will wait a year for my mom's, granny's or my sister in law. Sometimes I will eat one of my cousins but it's a hit or miss.
Enjoy your holiday!

Fruit cakes have a bad rap. The few times I had them, they weren't bad. Have a great Christmas!
